Enrolment in Tsunami-Hit Middle School Improves With Smart Classes
A panchayat union middle school in Nagapattinam, which was completely demolished in 2004 by Tsunami now started seeing a drastic change in the enrolment. Credit goes to the smart class programme started in eight classrooms due to which this change occurred.
This school was having a total strength of 410 students, but it has fallen because of the Tsunami occurred in 2004. Near about 80 students were washed away in this.
Education Department introduces the smart class programme as an aim to attract the parents. They implemented this as a trial for VII standard in the academic year 2013-2014. After this initiative, strength of the classroom reached 134 and now it is 390.
The fishermen were highly impressed by this and contributed in the bill to appoint additional 6 teachers in the school.
In the current academic year, the school was awarded Kamaraj Award. District Collector S. Palanisamy handed over a cheque of Rs. 50,000 and shown gratitude towards the effort of the education department to educate the children of fishermen.
