Yoga Will Be a Compulsory Subject for School Goers: Smriti Irani
The Indian Government is taking all steps to promote yoga at a national level. HRD minister Smriti Irani is taking it to the education field as well. She has announced that Yoga will be a compulsory subject from classes I to VI in central government-run schools. Yoga will also be part of the training module for teacher education programmes.
The minister also announced that there will be a national-level yoga competition that will be held in Delhi in 2016 for students. The winner will get a cash prize of Rs. 5 lakhs. The minister also said the subject wouldn’t be a burden as 80 marks are reserved for practicals.
The minister has also informed that there is a training module for teachers – Yoga for Teacher Education Programme. There would be diploma, bachelors and masters in Yoga Education.
Ms. Irani also said that a mobile app for downloading NCERT books (class I to XII) for free would be launched on July 17th
