Always an Inspiration: Kalam’s Birthday to Be Celebrated As Youth Inspiration Day in Tamil Nadu


Chennai:  As a mark of respect to the former people’s president Dr A P J Abdul Kalam, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa announced that her government decided to designate October 15, his birthday as "Youth Inspiration Day".

Ms Jayalalithaa has ordered the institution of 'Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Award' with a prize money of Rs. 5,00,000 and an eight-gram gold medal.

The award will be given to a person who is a resident of the state and working for the development of science, humanity and student welfare.

Ms Jayalalithaa confirmed that from this year onwards the award will be given on Independence Day. Dr Kalam was born on October 15, 1931, in Tamil Nadu's Rameswaram. With full military honours, he was laid to rest on Rameswaram after he died in Meghalaya's Shillong city following cardiac arrest.
