Indian Education Framework Needs to Change Completely: Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam

Former President of India, Dr. ABJ Abdul Kalam recommended a complete makeover for the higher education framework in the country. Dr. Kalam was speaking on the occasion of 3rd Malti Gyan Peeth Puraskar-2015 to Punjabs teachers in New Delhi. He also mentioned about the need of skill development to face future challenges.

Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam is also known as the “Missile Man” for his contribution to Indian Guided Missile Development programme.

At the event, Dr. Kalam also suggested that the students must be given “skill certificates” apart from normal degrees.[Read: Lacking Education as Deadly as Smoking: Study] He said, “In decades time, India will need 300 to 500 million employable skilled youth and there is a need to completely change the university education syllabus and secondary school education syllabus."

Dr. Kalam also said, “Two certificates should be given to students. In schools, one skill certificate and one education certificate and in college, degree and diploma on the expertise acquired. In schools from class 9 to 12, 25 per cent of the time has to be allotted for skill development programme."

Others who attended the event include Union Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi and Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal. At the event, 15 teachers from different Government schools in Punjab were awarded.
