Indian States to Include Yoga in School Curriculum


India is on its path of going back to its ancient physical, mental and spiritual practice. The International Day of Yoga was a part of the venture. Now, Yoga is going to be a part of school curricula in different Indian states.

Maharashtra, Karnataka and Gujarat had announced their plans to introduce Yoga in their schools curricula on Sunday. However, states like Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh have already included Yoga in their school syllabi from this academic year.

Maharashtra education minister Vinod Tawde and Gujarat chief minister Anandiben Patel announced on Sunday that they were planning to introduce Yoga in schools. Andhra Pradesh has also announced a grant of Rs.25 crore to conduct yoga events on a regular basis.

"Government is planning to include yoga in school and college curriculum," Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah said in Bengaluru. He was talking at the Yoga day event in the state. Siddaramaiah performed nadi suddhi pranayama with his cabinet colleagues during the s.

Rajasthan has also made Surya Namaskar compulsory in schools. Also, the Chhattisgarh Education Department had introduced extra classes in schools, just days ahead of International Day for Yoga.

Many CBSE and ICSE schools across India already have Yoga included in their syllabus. Due to the benefits Yoga offers, schools seem to make the right move.
